Volunteer roles

With over 50,000 expected participants, we need your help. There are many different ways in which you can lend a hand. The following is a list of the various volunteer roles available.

Drink Station Assistants
Drink Stations will be located along the 10km course. The drink stations will be very fast-paced and as a volunteer you will be required to distribute the drinks to participants, ensure there are an adequate number of cups and all used plastic cups are picked up. Each station will have approximately 4-8 trestle tables, 8-10 water containers and a generous supply of plastic cups. You will be responsible for setting up and dismantling the drink station with guidance from a USM EVENTS staff member. Once the last participant has passed, all items, including rubbish bags can be neatly stacked on the side of the road ready for collection.

Course Marshals
As a Course Marshal you will be located in various positions along the course. Your role will vary throughout the day and may include (but won’t be limited to) the following duties:
• Notifying the Event Operations Team if problems arise
• Providing information to spectators and participants
• Assisting at designated pedestrian crossings
• Supporting the participants

Parking Marshals
There will be three major designated parking lots for the event’s participants and spectators. If you are volunteering as a Parking Marshal you will be allocated to one of the following areas:
• 10km Start Line – Metroplex Carpark
• 10km Start Line – Murarrie Recreation Reserve
• 5km Start Line – Remora Street Carpark
You will be responsible for directing traffic within the parking lots upon entry and exit and ensuring the safety of pedestrians.

Breakfast Tents
There will be numerous breakfast tents surrounding the outskirts of the finish line venue and entry into these tents will be via a pre-paid wristband. We will require several volunteers to assist with the checking of wristbands into these areas. In this role, you will assist the catering crew to ensure movement of competitor traffic flows continuous in and out of these catering areas.

Baggage Area Services
The event baggage tent will be located at the end of the finish shoot. As a volunteer you will work in one of two areas helping participants deposit and collect their bags.
• Baggage drop off trucks will be located at the start line on the Lytton Road overpass. Here you will be helping to load participant baggage.
• Baggage collection area will be located at the finish line venue at EKKA Showgounds at the end of the finish shoot. Your job will be to separate baggage, ensure all baggage is in the right queue and provide assistance with baggage retrieval for all participants. Be aware participants will come through in waves depending on what race they completed.

Information Volunteers
As a volunteer in any role you will be called upon to provide information to participants at the Finish Line venue. The Sunday Mail Suncorp Bridge to Brisbane is a mass participation event with thousands of participants wanting to know answers to various questions. We will prepare you with the relevant answers so you are confident to answer any question.

Recovery
The recovery area is a crucial component of the event. In this role, you will aid in the hydration and recovery of all participants by providing water and fruit for their consumption. Your role will also involve monitoring rubbish and ensuring there is a satisfactory number of cups available. The recovery area will be located at the finish line at the end of the finish shoot.

Chip Removal
Timing chip removal will be located at the finish line at the T-shirt collection point. Your role as a volunteer at this location will be to aid participants in the removal of their chip and ensure they are placed in the wheelie bins provided.

T-Shirt Collection
As a T-shirt collection volunteer you will be located in the volunteer tent at the end of the finish chute and your role will be to provide the participants with their nominated shirt size. Participants must hand their timing chip in before being issued with an event t-shirt, so in this role you will be working closely with the Chip Removal Volunteers.

Start Zone Ushers
We require several volunteers to help at the start lines of both the 5km and 10km events. These volunteers will be helping the management team to group the competitors into their starting zones and also to ensure the flow of traffic through the start line area is safe and continuous.

Timing Assistants
Physically fit volunteers will be required to assist our timing company to lay mats and pack up timing equipment at the start and finish lines on race day. These volunteers will be working with our timing company to ensure all competitors receive a result at the end of the day.
